BIO
Sydney Snyder is an artist and art educator living in Los Angeles, CA.
Sydney is in her tenth year teaching art in a school setting. In 2020 she was nominated for CSUN's Outstanding Pandemic Teaching Award and received Honorable Mention. She has been invited to speak about her work in education at institutions such as Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Chapman University, Colorado TAB, Adding Voices, and Art Educators of New Jersey. She often shares free curriculum resources for teachers, parents, and young artists on her website under “Teaching Resources” and started a free "TAB Teacher Share Folder" on Google Drive where TAB teachers from around the world share their teaching resources with one another.
For the last seven years, Sydney taught art at an inclusive model TK-8 school where learners of all physical and intellectual abilities work side by side all day. For her last 4 years at that school, Sydney ran a TAB (Teaching for Artistic Behavior)/choice-based studio where the curriculum was student-directed and culturally responsive. In her TAB studio, students learned Studio Habits of the Mind and contemporary art history while creating works of art with personal meaning in a wide variety of mediums of their choosing.
Sydney also works as Co-Conspirator at Adding Voices with founder Flavia Zuñiga-West, creating curriculum resources, editing newsletters, and organizing events. Adding Voices creates conferences and workshops that are intentionally committed to equity, social justice, and inclusion in teaching, learning, and building community for art educators who are Black, Brown, Indigenous, or part of the Global Majority.
Sydney founded an inclusive after school enrichment program and summer camp called Art Encounter in 2017. The founding of this program led to hosting workshops and private parties for artists of all ages and physical and intellectual abilities outside of school. You can see more on that work here.
In her own studio practice, Sydney currently enjoys working with glitter, yarn, felt, and dye to create happy, soft, colorful, and sparkly works. You can find her on Instagram @sydneyteachingart and online at www.justsydneysnyder.com.
